Liga Pilipinas

Liga Plilipinas is a regional basketball league in the Philippines. It was founded in 2008 with the motto “Ang Rebolusyon ng Basketball” (The Revolution of Basketball).

Liga Pilipinas is a community-based, commercially subsidized basketball league. It is owned by Pinoy Basketball Inc. (PBI), an association formed through an alliance with three regional basketball stakeholders: National Basketball Conference (NBC), Third Force Inc.(TFI), and Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA).

Through an agreement between Liga Pilipinas and the Philippine Basketball League, a joint tournament named “Tournament of the Philippines” is being held starting in June 2010. It is a dry run of a proposed “Development League”, and was initiated by the Philippine Basketball Association and modeled after the NBA’s D-League.

Liga Pilipina is a true partner with each community, sponsoring and bringing basketball entertainment and outreach programs throughout the archipelago. Each game takes place in a venue where a community can develop pride for its team. The league provides platforms for sponsors to bring their products closer to their target markets through above-the-line and below-the-line advertising, promotions, outreach programs, and sales-generating opportunities.

While the Internet brings you general basketball 24/7, the business and operations of Liga Pilipinas are separately and independently managed by Pinoy Basketball Management Inc. (PBMI), which has been granted a multi-year irrevocable contract by PBI. PBMI has assembled a team of highly-skilled professionals who have had extensive experience and expertise in managing the affairs of a basketball league.

Liga Pilipinas brings together sixteen teams representative of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao gathered into two groups:

The format of Liga Pilipinas addresses three main objectives:

(1) An arrangement that is simple for the public to understand,
(2) An arrangement that is economical for the league, teams, and sponsors, helping them to control costs and maximize exposure,
(3) An arrangement of incentives for teams to minimize, if not avoid, no-bearing games.

The Liga Pilipinas season is composed of two conferences, each running for four months. Each conference will have two phases, the Divisional Championships and the National Liga Championships. The total games per conference are a maximum of 175 games. The format is home and away; thus there are 16 venues where Liga will be played, one home venue per team.

Liga Pilipinas partners with communities and sponsors. It brings the entertainment of basketball and also outreaches programs to the islands of the archipelago. Each Liga Pilipinas game is played at a venue where a community can watch and develop pride for its team. The league also provides a platform for sponsors to bring their products closer to their target markets.
