Sprint Cup – Reutimann won Rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 on a gamble

David Reutimann claimed the Coca-Cola 600 – his first career major events – in a rain-soaked Monday afternoon. It was the first win for Michael Waltrip Racing – one of only two teams to claim a Toyota Cup race. The race has been postponed one day. Initially scheduled to run on Sunday, the longest event of the season was moved to Monday after the weather made it impossible to run, marking the first time in Historically the event that the race is run on Memorial Day. Monday, however, proved little better. Through the heavy gray cloud space, race Monday frequent showers interrupted: first in lap 8, and then lap 72. The race went beyond the halfway point after the 03:00 red flag, when it became official. If The rain continued, NASCAR can finish the race. The Coca-Cola 600 was a race of strategy: the growing possibility of a red-flag, success comes to the driver forward – if the whole distance will run or not. The rain proved disastrous for the 173-lap race leader, Kyle Busch. Busch lost the lead on lap 222 during final caution, when he, along with a cadre of other cars, pulled over for a pit stop. He was followed by Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards, and Joey Logano, respectively. According to Busch, they knew the rain was coming, but they also know that they are going to be able to ride under caution for long, because they only have fuel for five laps around yet, so they needed to refuel. But while Busch and his cohorts paused, Reutimann took a gamble. Well behind the lead in the 14th, Reutimann and his crew chief, Rodney Childers, decided not to pull over after careful. If the race was stopped for rain soon, Reutimann would claim the victory. Reutimann led Ryan Newman and Bobby Gordon in the remaining five the caution laps before NASCAR called a third – and final – pit stop on lap 227. Unlike other drivers, Reutimann stayed with his car, joined through his father, Buzzie Reutimann. Buzzie prayed desperately that NASCAR would call the race, giving the 39-year-old his first Cup victory. But David not get his hopes up. For two hours, 3 minutes, 44 seconds, waited on Reutimann's gray drizzle before NASCAR called the race. And David Reutimann won – although he claimed the lead on any lap on the green. "It's not the prettiest win," he said, "but someone has to win. If you envision yourself winning your first Sprint Cup race, you envision it differently. But it's so hard to win the deals we have to take it in any way we can. "Reutimann has previously claimed a Truck race in 2005 and after the 2007 race across the country and Memphis. He has signed on to Michael Waltrip Racing in 2007, but team struggled to make races. The last two seasons have seen MWR take small step towards success, with Reutimann forward. He has managed to break above 12 points all season. The Coca-Cola 600 is the first Cup for both Reutimann and MWR. Newman came in second, third Gordon, Edwards 4, 5 Vickers and Busch – The race-high head – came in sixth. About the Author
