Phenoms Hockey: The Hockey Card Effect
Ever since Sidney Crosby entered the NHL and is eligible to become an official rookie card (Sidney were depicted on the card while in junior, but they are not considered rookie card), it looks like the hockey card industry back to life. We all remember the thrill of buying a pack in the 80's as children even if they are really worthless (in time) and each pack only costs us 35 cents. We also remember the rise and fall of hockey cards in the early 19 nineties. None of us even like to admit it, the excitement has built in the early nineties was mainly due to A child entering the league phenom named Eric Lindros. The collapse of the course is due to the fact that too many companies have made too many cards making it lush and devoid of any real value.
Ever since the phenomenal rise and fall of the early nineties, industry is trying to recover its fallen grace. At first, card companies realized that there needed to be some sort of card production standards. Companies began producing less and slowly started to return value. Besides producing a smaller number of set cards, the company started using other techniques to develop interest. Short printing special cards such as rookies brought some value back to the first card of the player entering the league. Currently rookie card is received in a ratio of packs per case (eg a rookie in every 4 packs a box of 24 packs). Special cards started to be introduced in the industry. Plain card base has become common and birth. Company began releasing material card game used, autographed cards, parallel variations, subsets, and many other different varieties of cards. Each new innovation, card companies are slowly bringing back consumer confidence and market share.
Bring new types of cards and preventing production runs good technique to drive value and strengthen the interest in hockey cards which come back from the disappointment they experienced. That being said, nothing generates more interest in card of a young phenom entering the league. Sidney Crosby admitted. Sidney Crosby (much like Eric Lindros before him), was a catalyst in bounding hockey interest card from his rookie year in 2005/06 NHL season. There is nothing better years for the NHL to have a player of Sidney Crosby's caliber to enter the league. The league has just gone through a period of lockout, and the 2004/05 season was a wash. To begin the 2005/06 season being Crosby's first coupled with the fact that there is no NHL hockey for fans starved for over a year, it was the perfect catalyst for a jump in the hockey card mania. Hockey cards have been selling for strong, with young guns Crosby leads you to push. Card companies have capitalized on the popularity of youth. Some might say it reeks of the same situation that occurred in the early 19 nineties, but the feeling is different this time. It seems possible that the card companies have learned from their mistakes and holding production is keeping under wraps.
There is no denying the quality of young players coming the congregation is a huge boost in sales hockey card, any other method of card companies can use. We saw Lindros and Crosby manias make a difference. John Tavares has entered the league this year and is bringing a Crosby like the excitement of the game. History dictates a hockey card uptick in interest for years. Only time will tell.
